Table Rock Law – Andrew Dennis

Traffic law in Morganton and other counties in western North Carolina

If you have received a speeding ticket or other  traffic citation recently, consider the total cost before simply pleading guilty and paying the fine.

While the immediate cost of your speeding ticket may be less than $200, the actual cost associated with it may be much higher. Even on a “minor” ticket, your insurance rate in North Carolina can go up between 40-55% for the next 3 years. For example, if you pay $150 a month for car insurance and get a 9 mile-per-hour over speeding ticket, your insurance can go up $60 a month for up to 36 months. This is a total of $2,160 in higher insurance premiums.

These increases vary based on the amount over the speed limit, the posted speed limit, the location of the citation, and the number of past citations.  All speeding convictions over 75 mph are a whopping 90% insurance increase for a “simple speeding ticket.”  This could make the potential total cost of the ticket well over $3,000.

Even simple speeding tickets can cost you your license in western NC

Also, in North Carolina if you plead guilty and pay any ticket that’s cited above 15 mph over you can potentially lose your license.  I met one person recently who had simply paid off a couple of 9 mph over speeding tickets in the prior three years and was currently paying well over $500 a month in car insurance due to three “minor” tickets.
