Daniel Gutierrez, a teacher at Freedom High School, has been named Burke County Public Schools 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year. Gutierrez is in his 33rd year of working for Burke County Public Schools. A new program is expected to provide food for nearly a million school children in North Carolina this summer. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, today announced its intent to administer the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s new Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer (S-EBT) Program known as “SUN Bucks.”
Burke County Public Schools elementary school students showed off their math skills in this year's MathCounts Competition held Feb. 22 at the Old Rock School in Valdese. Each of the 14 elementary schools had a team of around six students, showcasing their knowledge of math during team rounds and individual rounds. The eight students with the highest scores went head-to-head in the face-off round, answering challenging math problems in less than a minute in front of an audience of parents and students.
